LDPE & LLDPE

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) are the main resins for flexible packaging. LDPE gives clarity and easy processing. LLDPE adds toughness, puncture resistance and down-gauging. Film lines often blend the two.

  • Chemical namePolyethylene, low density / linear low density (ethylene–α-olefin copolymer)
  • CAS No.9002-88-4 (LDPE); LLDPE by comonomer, e.g. 25087-34-7 (butene)
  • Density (typical)LDPE 0.910 – 0.930 g/cm³ · LLDPE 0.915 – 0.940 g/cm³
  • Comonomer (LLDPE)Butene (C4), hexene (C6) or octene (C8)

Frequently asked questions

Why blend LDPE and LLDPE?

LDPE improves bubble stability and clarity on blown-film lines. LLDPE adds tear and puncture strength. The blend ratio depends on the film and the line.

What does C4, C6 or C8 mean?

It is the comonomer used to make the LLDPE: butene, hexene or octene. Hexene and octene grades usually give tougher film than butene grades.

Do you supply film-grade additives in the resin?

Many grades come with slip and antiblock added. The offer lists the additive package of the exact grade quoted.
